Sandra Speidel is a fine artist based in northern California, who specializes in figurative and abstract painting.
Speidel’s recent paintings explore richly layered surfaces of figures moving through environments such as airports and city streets, as well as in contemplative solitude.
They suggest the representational and then push the boundaries toward the abstract, creating flat textural surfaces of depth and ambiguity.
She studied fine art at San Francisco Academy of Art University and San Francisco Art Institute, and with Chester Arnold, Phillip Buller, and Michael Azgour. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate figurative drawing and painting at the Academy of Art. She is also a directed study instructor, has designed two courses, and mentors for the online program. In addition, she teaches privately from her studio in Petaluma.
She grew up in Ohio, and as a child filled numerous sketchbooks with familial scenes. She has degrees in English, and journalism, danced for eight years, studied acting for 5 years, and is a published poet. She worked as an illustrator for 20 years before turning to painting.
